The APA first celebrated Afghanistan Independence Day in August of 1996. It
has ever since become a tradition in New York, in which thousands of people from
the Afghan community in the US, as well as other communities participate. It was
originally celebrated to bring Afghan together, for the war had not only destroyed
the country, but torn the people apart as well. The Independence Day celebration
brings Afghans together from all walks of life, regardless of their socio/political
backgrounds. Every individual has taken pride to be part of such a great day in
their history. It was made possible by active participation of many different
Afghan organizations, businesses, families, and individuals for which Afghanistan
Peace Association (APA) expresses great gratitude as the umbrella organization.
It was funded and organized by the APA. It is now being celebrated for two days
instead of just one by popular demand. And new organizations have shown interest
in funding and organizing this great event.
